Mechanical-pulp-only mills endured into the 21st century, only to experience significant decline over the past decade. With UPM’s recent closure announcement of their Madison operation, there remain only eight US mills producing exclusively mechanical pulp. What’s the future of mechanical-only mills in today’s marketplace? Do they have a place or will they soon fade into memory? We’ll look at the five mills producing the most common grade, newsprint.
