The Navigator Company Temporarily Suspends Paper Production Due To Market Slowdown

(Portugal) The Navigator Company temporarily suspended paper production for 30 days beginning April 22 due to an unprecedented drop in orders experienced from the end of March as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. This has resulted in lost production of between 700 and 2,000 TPD.

The shutdown had no impact on employees, said the company in its Q1, 2020 report. The company later decided to extend the cut in production until the end of June 2020. Meanwhile, production at the company's Cacia tissue mill in Aveiro and its Velha de Ródão mill in Castelo Branco continued with no restriction on their operations.

Chinese Producers Lobby Government to Improve Access to Overseas Recovered Paper

According to Recycling Today, producers of aluminum, copper and paper in China all have reportedly been lobbying the Chinese government to improve access to overseas scrap materials.

A recovered fiber broker in the midwestern United States told Recycling Today the pulping mill in Byron, Wisconsin, owned by Hong Kong-based Nine Dragons Paper helped create upward pressure for old corrugated container (OCC) prices in the first four months of 2020.

The broker said mill was attempting to make and ship to China as much pulp as it could produce to help fill the domestic OCC supply shortfall in China, which was exacerbated when China’s economy shrank in February and early March because of COVID-19 restrictions.

Canfor Pulp Products to Temporarily Halt Production At Intercontinental, Prince George Mills

(Canada) Canfor Pulp Products is planning to curtail production at its Intercontinental and Price George mills in British Columbia for four weeks starting July 6, 2020. The decision to curtail output is mainly a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and the shortage of economically viable fiber in the region.

“We have made the difficult decision to temporarily curtail Prince George Pulp and Paper and Intercontinental Pulp due to the major global economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and the shortage of economically viable fibre in the region,” Canfor Pulp CEO Don Kayne said in a release.

The curtailment will reduce Canfor Pulp’s production output by approximately 38,000 tonnes of market kraft pulp and 12,000 tonnes of kraft paper.

European Consumers Prefer Paper-based Packaging, Survey Reveals

(UK) A European survey of 5,900 Europeans by industry campaign Two Sides and independent research company Toluna shows they prefer paper-based packaging. Some 63 percent of consumers choose it for being better for the environment, 57 percent because it is easier to recycle, and 72 percent because it is home compostable. Paper/cardboard packaging is considered to be the most recycled material, with 30 percent believing the European recycling rate is over 60 percent. Since the actual recycling rate is 85 percent, many consumers still underestimate the recycling rate.

CEPI Favors Free Trade Agreement Between UK, EU For Circular Economy

(Belgium) The Confederation of European Paper Industries (CEPI) has issued a position paper on the "EU-UK post-Brexit" that proposes a free trade agreement to preserves competitiveness, favor investments, and support the circular economy.

It estimated that around 8.1 million tonnes of pulp, paper for recycling, paper and converted paper products valued at €7.3 billion are traded each year between the UK and the EU27. It supports a pro-investment environment in both the UK and EU and says existing supply chains between the partners must not be disrupted either by new tariffs or by any new non-tariff barriers.
