Pulp and Paper Industry Spring 2022 Sustainability Roundup

May 09, 2022

The Pulp and Paper industry continues to gain recognition for its sustainability-related advancements and achievements through new innovations and related initiatives. Each month, we continue to see progression towards a more environmentally friendly economy that is made possible in many cases by participants across the global pulp and paper value chain. To that end, we’ve included some of the top stories recently highlighting these initiatives.

Warburtons Launches New Bread Range in Paper Packs

Bakery brand Warburtons is adding a new range of health-orientated products to its bread portfolio that will be available in recyclable paper packaging. The range will be wrapped in fully recyclable paper packaging which can be recycled via normal curbside collections.

“Making the packaging fully recyclable is also just another step in the right direction for us and we are thrilled that we are able to offer a more sustainable option to packaging that does not impact the freshness of the loaf,” said Darren Littler, Innovation Director at Warburtons.

Swiss Chalet Partners with WestRock to Launch Recyclable Paperboard Packaging Throughout Restaurant Chain in Canada

With a goal to replace rigid black PET trays and lids with packaging made from renewable resources, WestRock leveraged its comprehensive portfolio of sustainable paper to develop a packaging solution for Swiss Chalet. Uncoated recycled board containing 100% recycled fiber was selected for outer meal cartons to increase ease of disposal in curbside recycling.

The modular system uses uncoated recycled board (URB) and EnShield® Natural Kraft to maintain the high-performance standards required by Swiss Chalet, while simultaneously increasing the sustainability attributes of its takeout containers.

When in Rome Launches Paper Wine Bottle into Ocado

When in Rome is launching a paper wine bottle into Ocado. The bottle is made from 94% recycled paper and is claimed to have a carbon footprint 84% lower than a single-use glass bottle. It was developed in collaboration with sustainable packaging company Frugalpac.

When in Rome founder Rob Malin said the bottles combined “all of the eco advantages of our bag-in-box format” with the added advantage of having “the same shape, capacity and price point of other premium brands still being sold in single-use glass bottles.”

Aveda’s Recyclable Paper Sample Packet Replaces Multilayer Foil Sachets

Sampling is a big category for The Estée Lauder Companies. Aveda and its supplier partners found a way to sample product more sustainably, using curbside recycle-ready (or -certified, depending on locale) paper packets to replace multilayer foil sachets.

Aveda says the new pack design is a superior solution for sampling applications. In addition to being curbside recyclable by European and U.K. consumers at the end of the sample pack’s life, the packets have been designed with sustainability in mind. They were studied in detail through a peer-reviewed life-cycle assessment, which calculated a reduction of 36% to 68% in water consumption and 37% to 64% in emissions [CO2 equivalent] when compared to multi-layer laminated structures commonly used in the industry.

PulPac and HSMG Launch Plant-Based Barrier Coatings for Molded Fiber Coffee Cup Lids

PulPac and HSMG have collaborated on water and oil barriers for PulPac’s Dry Molded Fiber technology that allows a thin, stretchable substrate to be applied during the forming process, helping to ensure the recyclability of molded fiber packaging used for applications like coffee cups.

The companies explain that paper and molded fiber packaging used for food contact applications traditionally incorporates a thin plastic film with the addition of fluorochemicals to prevent water and grease from leaking through. However, plastic layers can make paper-based packaging difficult to recycle, while fluorochemicals are increasingly being banned in some places due to their environmental and health impacts.
